FileZilla Server: Publish the WAN IP address from a LAN installed server

If you are host­ing your own FTP server at home. I know that you’ve many, many pho­tos to share with fam­ily ;-). Your friends may have encoun­tered a warn­ing upon their con­nec­tion to your server. Some­thing say­ing the returned address is LAN based. That’s should not the case, as they are con­nect­ing to Inter­net through ISP. The solu­tion is to look closer the “pas­sive mode” set­tings panel. As named this panel addresses…other stuffs than “pas­sive mode”! :-)

Solu­tion: Help FileZilla Server to retrieve the WAN IP address, from Inter­net, through a third part web server ded­i­cated to this action. The FileZilla Server analyse returned HTML page then, to extract the WAN IP Address —  that allo­cated by your ISP.

Action:

  1. Firstly, tick the “Retrieve Exter­nal IP address from:”.
  2. Sec­ondly, in the under­ly­ing form; type in http://dynupdate.no-ip.com/ip.php.
  3. Thirdly, tick the “Don’t use exter­nal IP for local connections”.

Check­ing: Why not using the client from FileZilla project to con­trol that? OK. just run “FileZilla”, sup­ply the cre­den­tials to con­nect to the server, and you can see in the top “mes­sage” view: filezilla-client-wan-ip-checked-2009-07-22-111011
